After court adjourned that afternoon, ten TV crews and two dozen reporters surrounded me in a half circle. As my colleagues confronted me with questions, I felt like I was watching a movie about myself. When the news conference ended ten minutes later, I was exhilarated and exhausted.

“As far as we’re concerned, he was attempting to manipulate the outcome of the case,” Pam Bozanich told a reporter afterward.

I was simply being a journalist and publishing significant information. When court adjourned the next afternoon, as I left the courtroom I saw Bozanich, who had a curious look on her face. Maybe it was because she’d listened to my entire interview and realized that I hadn’t asked leading questions. Goodreau had freely volunteered detailed information about the molestation.

Three days later, I appeared before Judge Weisberg with an attorney and requested the return of my reserved courtroom seat. The prosecution still wanted me excluded from the courtroom because I was a potential witness. It was the first time in the trial that prosecutors had requested that any witness be kept out. Jose Menendez’s sisters had appeared in court daily and frequently were emotional. Three weeks (and thousands of dollars in legal bills) later, the judge allowed me back in.

“Well, the situation has not yet changed but the court feels, at this point, even though the court is satisfied that its ruling was and is correct in regards to Mr. Rand and his status regarding the reporter’s shield law, the court will permit him to return to the courtroom.”

With the ruling, I could then resume simply covering the story instead of being part of it. But neither I—nor the court—was done with Donovan Goodreau yet.
